Any Petrol vehicle can readily be converted to use Auto LPG by fitting an Auto LPG conversion kit and tank. After retrofitting the vehicle, the vehicle has to obtain the necessary endorsement from the RTO for running on Auto LPG.

Auto LPG conversion kits cost between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 12,000 for conventional carburetor systems and between Rs. 15, 000 and Rs. 18,000 for MPFI systems.

The viability of installing an Auto LPG conversion kit is best exemplified by measures such as fuel economy, savings on account of reduction of engine wear and tear, reduced consumption of engine oil, lower fuel cost per kilometer, etc.

The Auto LPG kit should be purchased only from an approved Auto LPG kit Supplier whose kits have been duly approved by any either ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India, Pune) or VRDE (Vehicles Research & Development Establishment, Ahmednagar), under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 (with latest amendments).

The Auto LPG conversion kit and tank fitted in vehicles should conform to the following Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS):

• IS 14899: 2000 for LPG Containers for Automotive use
• IS 15100: 2001 of Multi-Functional Valve Assembly on fixed LPG containers
